氯化硫是一種黃紅色液體，有刺激性、窒息性惡臭，在空氣中強(qiáng)烈發(fā)煙。遇水分解為硫、二氧化硫、氯化氫。溶于醚、苯、二硫化碳。二氯化二硫的熔點(diǎn)為-80℃，沸點(diǎn)137.1℃。密度為1.688g/cm3.蒸汽壓15 hPa (20 °C)。

由硫與限量氯氣在50~60°C反應(yīng)16~20小時而得:2S+Cl2→S2Cl2;二硫化碳與氯氣在95~100°C反應(yīng)製取四氯化碳，副產(chǎn)二氯化二硫:CS2+3Cl2→CCl4+S2Cl2.

用作橡膠的低溫硫化劑和粘結(jié)劑。
在有機(jī)合成中用于引入 C–S 鍵。在氯化鋁存在下，與苯反應(yīng)生成二苯硫醚。與乙烯反應(yīng)生成芥子氣。也是Herz反應(yīng)中的試劑。
